Description by taker of photograph: "Canal in Ponani. Ponani is one of the outstations of Parapperi. Ponani is a significant centre of Islam and is called the 'Mecca of South India'. There is a house in the town for people who convert to Islam - and every year there are, in fact, several hundred converts. The canals are the so-called 'Back-Waters', which run along behind the coast. You can travel along these canals as far as Travancore and Cochin. In Travancore and Cochin you even find steamships on the canals. Nowadays a steamship travels between Ponani and Tirur, where the most convenient railway station for Ponani is to be found. The ticket costs only 4 annas, although the distance is 10 Km. The old missionaries like Gundert often travelled on these canals, and mostly by night, because during the day there used to be few boats. Gundert noted the songs sung by the boatmen. There is heavy traffic on these canals mostly in the transport of goods. Ponani is also a harbour (see photograph 1520b [C-30.88.002]) mostly used by coastal steamers. But every now and again smaller tramp ships on international voyages call in here.
